Grapes: second year in conversion BioGro organic Chenin Blanc.
Hand-picked & vineyard sorted on March 24th, 2020.
Origin: This is from the exceptional Two Terraces vineyard (Mangatahi region). I was on a waiting list to get allocated a tiny bit of fruit so was happy to get some! There are only 4.8ha of Chenin planted in Hawke’s Bay in total.
Soils: intermediate river terrace, coarse, sandy loam with red metal overlays. Low in fertility.
Winemaking: The grapes were foot crushed in picking bins and left to soak for 18 hours to extract phenolics. Whole bunch pressed into old barrels. I made a vineyard starter (pied de cuve) with Chenin grapes that fermented naturally in the vineyard under the vines. I then inoculated my barrels with this tasty juice!
This is one of my longest fermenting wines (from harvest throughout winter!) and has tropical fruit notes of guava, mango with Green apple and dry razor finish.
A bit more... The label is a tasting note of all the fruit notes that came up during fermentation: mango, peach, guava & granny smith apple.
I first got into wine during my years working in the Vancouver hospitality and wine retail scene. The friendly nickname Amoise arose during a memorable wine challenge and has stuck to this day. (pronounce “am-was”).
My never-ending thirst for knowledge sent me to work in Central Otago, where I fell in love with biodynamic farming. In Burgundy I completed my diploma in Viticulture & Winemaking. My time living and working in France allowed me to soak up the historical culture of wine, as well as learn from hardworking vignerons who put their energies and efforts into the vineyards to enable them to simply guide their grapes to the winery and bottle with minimal intervention. After several harvests in France, Australia, Italy & Canada I came back to my home in NZ.
I work with certified organic grapes sourced locally in Hawke's Bay because I believe in responsible farming, improving the health of our soils and what we put into our bodies. This is why I produce wines with no additions or adulterations of any kind.
